A high potential technology for alternative energy is photovoltaic (PV) modules. Current PV products require rigid glass substrates, which add significant weight and cost to the device. In order to truly capture the market potential for PV technology, there is a strong move towards flexible substrates, which allow greater design and application freedom, reduce cost, and allow for roll-to-roll printing-like production.
APS is working with partners on the development of polymer materials that retain transparency and structural integrity at the highest processing temperature needed for producing thin-film solar cells. APS has extensive research experience in developing and synthesizing novel polymers that meet the optical, thermal, and mechanical requirements for this application.
